Last night we had a very special guest surprise us at the pizzeria, one of the most influential friends and mentors I’ve had, Joe Rivera. Joe gave me my first job ever as a young teenage boy in his pizzeria”pizza paradise” which existed for many years on Cleveland’s West side on Joan Ave and 105th st.

When we migrated to America in 99’ Joe first employed my father Carlos as a pizza maker and delivery guy for a few years. Pizza paradise was always a small true mom and pop shop operation and Joe liked it that way so he could keep his recipes tight and consistent.

After my father was ready to move on to another job, Joe decided to give me a chance to fill my father’s shoes making pizza. Those were some of the most influential years of my life, seeing how much care and hard work this gentleman put into his business and the importance of having genuine relationships with your guests. Joe treated me like family the 6 years I worked for him and his wife Monin.

Turns out Joe had been quite the influence in his community well before he owned his pizza shop, he opened the first Spanish movie theater in Cleveland, had a car dealership once and he even opened Cleveland’s first Latino Super Market which specialized in bringing imported goods from his home back in Puerto Rico.

The very next time I would touch pizza dough wasn’t until I then landed that gig in Naples, Italy to learn to make pizza. I was surprised at myself on how quickly I was able to adjust and that the motor skills I had no idea existed were still intact. This came in handy fitting in with the pizzaiolos and gaining their graces by not being in the way but rather being a crucial part of each shift that consisted of making around a thousand pies per day.

The people in the photos are Joe back in the 60s next to his company vehicle and the other is 14 year old me working at his pizza shop.

We are having too much fun bringing pizzas to your table! It’s just the way it is when everyone who’s put their little grain in this project is so talented, folks that have been with our restaurant group for years and have been part of our continued growth, it’s like when the avengers assemble 🤜🏼🤛🏽🇮🇹🍕🍕🔥
